My end goal with this writing gig is to be at the top of the game - the A-list of the genre I write. I want to pen the kind of stories that can transport the reader away from the normalcy of life to experience an exciting, different world. To write fantastic stories that have people lining up to buy them; dressing up like my characters at conventions and book signings; gushing about plot changes and character developments in a multitude of online forums.
Most days, I feel like I’m flailing. I have little time to write, less time to promote, and am struggling at networking. But today, I looked at my bookshelf and realized I’m on the right track. Building an empire takes time. I knew I wasn’t going to be one of the lucky ones whose books found an immediate audience and snowballed into quick success. I mean, I hoped, but given my experience with gambling, one thing has long been clear: I do not have that type of luck.
Persistence, hard work, dedication, patience, and a willingness to keep improving - I have those traits (I like to think). And maybe, just maybe, my bookshelf will not be the only one hosting Marie Johnston’s books with other USA Today and New York Times Bestselling Authors. Don’t quit dreaming, we all have to start somewhere.
