A couple of my friends reviewed my books on Amazon. Thank you!! It was such a pleasant surprise to log on and see wonderful reviews by wonderful people. But now what?
I tried a popular website that lists all the official book reviewers, their genres, and requirements. I emailed only three book reviewers. I got one “no thanks, I don’t read paranormal romance” (my bad, I didn’t catch that), one no reply, and one that said she’d do it (that was three months ago, still no review).
Being innately tenacious (my mom called it nagging), I decided to dig in further for some more reviews. Cue Goodreads. What an awesome freakin’ website! I joined a review swap group, put out an offer, and now I actually have “friends” on the site and have had three reviews (all superb!!) with three more in the wings.
It’s been a riot! Not only do I get more emails and notifications that make me feel important, but it’s fun to read and formulate sentences from observations I’ve made in their story or writing. Some of these indie authors are really good, like really good, and I’m reading books I never would’ve picked because they aren’t in my typical paranormal romance genre.
Some of the authors are, you know…okay. One book I hated, if I were honest – and honestly, I couldn’t be honest. I mean, she’s reviewing my book too and I only want to help her and I don’t want her to trash mine out of anger (not that she would, but these people are strangers). I did enjoy the challenge of crafting a review that didn’t say I merely endured the book, but not that I liked or enjoyed it either.
Book reviews have me hooked and I have a website, so…I’m gonna review me some books. To begin with, until life slows (hahahahaha), I’m going to alternate between traditionally published, big name authors and indie authors. The genres will be mostly paranormal and contemporary romance – no new adult romance. I’m not a prude (only a surprise to those who have read my writing), but reading about the love and sex life of an eighteen year old makes me feel old and creepy – heavy on the creepy. I mean, there was this one short story I just read-
Never mind. It weirds me out just thinking about it.
With no swapping going on (I'll still swap on Goodreads and review where they request, just not on my site), I can feel free to review openly and honestly but always strive to be gracious and professional. And I have every intention that once I’m an absurdly successful writer with over a million daily hits on my website, I will still review for indie authors striving to make it in this business.
